Reducing spring flood impacts for wellbeing of communities of the Northһ.
In this article the authors summarize the results of the project ҺReducing spring flood impacts for wellbeing of communities of the Northһ, which is a part of the U.S.- Russia Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Initiate 2015-2016. This project is based on a comparative analysis between two northern riverine communities that are prone to severe springtime flooding. Edeytsy in Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia and Galena in Alaska, United States sustained severe socio-economic impacts during the floods on the Lena and Yukon rivers (respectively) in May 2013. Populations at risk in both communities completed surveys, which allowed the researchers to evaluate the effectiveness of disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery on federal, regional, and local levels in the US and Russia.
