The article is relevant due to its focus on the intellectual debates among early 20th century Yakut scholars, who contested the earlier tradition of descriptive research methods. It also addresses the publication of representative examples of Yakut oral literature, with particular attention to the epic tradition. In this context, their formulation of the problem of distinguishing between “verse and prose” on the material of the Yakut epic olonkho, along with its subsequent methodological substantiation, made it possible, for the first time in the Yakut scholarly tradition, to examine the significance of the poetic element not only in individual components of the traditional epic but also in the emerging written literature as a whole, thereby defining its specificity and fundamental distinction from folklore. The goal of this article is a retrospective analysis of the ideas of these early Yakut humanities scholars related to the distinction between literature and oral folklore and the introduction of the concepts of the “poetic principle” in literature and “poetic form” into scholarly circulation. The material and object of this study are concepts of literature and its specificity in the literary works and scholarly works of A.E. Kulakovsky, P.A. Oyunsky, and G.V. Baishev, as well as in the archival legacy of S.A. Novgorodov and G.V. Ksenofontov. The article utilizes diachronic and structural-typological methods of analysis, as well as an internal reconstruction method for G.V. Baishev’s lost scholarly texts. As a result, the article analyzes two fragments of the scholarly continuity of the first Yakut humanities scholars of the early 20th century. and the turn of the 1920s–1930s – made it possible not only to determine their contribution to the formation of Yakut humanitarian science, but also from the very beginning to assume the inclusion of their developments and the disputes themselves in the field of poetic specificity of literature in the general context of world philological science of the 20th century, in particular – its two scientific schools “OPOYAZ” and “Prague” concepts of “poetic language”.
